How SiteStash works.

Thanks for testing. Here's what to expect, then short videos in the order you'll need them.

What to expect in the test version

SiteStash runs as a web app for now. The Google Play and App Store versions come later and fix most of these.

  1. You install it from the website, not the app store. Safari's Share button, then Add to Home Screen (iPhone), or Chrome's menu, then Install app (Android). Always open it from that icon.
  2. Turning the phone can make the screen jump. On an iPhone the whole screen swings round instead of staying steady like the normal camera. Fix: swipe down from the top right and turn on Portrait Orientation Lock. Photos still save the right way up.
  3. iPhone may ask for camera permission again each time you open it. Tap Allow. On some iPhones the live camera won't open at all; the app then takes one photo at a time with the phone's camera instead.
  4. Keep the app open until photos say sent. A web app can't upload in the background. If you close it early, the photos wait on the phone and send the next time you open it. Nothing is lost.
  5. Google or Microsoft shows an “unverified app” warning when you connect your drive. That's expected while we're in testing. Tap Advanced, then continue.
  6. No flash or torch on iPhone. iPhone doesn't let web apps turn on the light. Android can.
  7. The first document scan takes a minute. It downloads the text reader once (about 7 MB). Use Wi-Fi the first time.
  8. Don't delete the app with unsent photos on it. Sent photos are safe in your drive and your jobs and names come back after a reinstall. Photos that never sent can't.
  9. You may have to reconnect your drive now and then, about every few months for OneDrive.
  10. It feels a bit less snappy than a normal app in spots, like opening the camera or scrolling a long list.

Videos and steps

  1. Put it on your Home Screen

    iPhone, in Safari
    Android, in Chrome

    iPhone, in Safari

    1. In Gmail, Facebook or another app? Open sitestash.app in Safari first
    2. Tap Share. On newer iPhones it's under •••
    3. Tap Add to Home Screen
    4. Tap Add

    Android, in Chrome

    1. Tap ⋮ at the top
    2. Tap Add to Home screen or Install app

From now on, open SiteStash from its icon, not the browser.

  2. Connect Google Drive or OneDrive

    1. Open SiteStash from its icon
    2. Open the menu, then tap the Settings gear at the top
    3. Tap Photos & Drive
    4. Tap Sign in with Microsoft or Sign in with Google. You can connect both

Warning that the app isn't verified? That's expected in testing. Tap Advanced, then continue. SiteStash can only see the files it creates, never the rest of your drive.

  3. Your first batch

    1. Tap Take photos and shoot as many as you like
    2. Tap Done
    3. Name the batch once, then pick the project and a folder
    4. Tap Save and send

It lands in your drive under SiteStash, then the project, then the folder, dated and numbered.

Pro tools

Turn these on under Pro Features in the menu. Pro is free while SiteStash is new.

  • Date and time stamp

Date, time and project printed on each photo.

  • Photo locations

Records where each photo is taken (GPS) and shows them on a map of the area.

  • Levels

Pick the floor in the camera; it goes on every photo after.

  • Photo report

A PDF of a batch with your logo and captions.

  • Scan documents

Turn a packing slip or drawing into a searchable PDF.

  • Markup

Arrows, circles, boxes and text on a photo: the pencil after a shot, or Mark up on any photo.

  • Voice name

Say each photo's name after taking it: "DP dash EWB dash 1" is saved as DP-EWB-1.

  • Voice caption

Say each photo's caption after taking it, instead of typing it.

  • Quick comments

Comments you type again and again, saved with a short title. Tap the title to add it to a photo's description.

Share a project with your crew

  1. Connect your drive first: everyone's photos go into it
  2. Open the menu, tap Shared Projects, then Share a project
  3. Pick the project and tap Start
  4. Type each person's email and tap Invite
  5. Tap Send invite beside their name to text or email them the link

Photos from everyone on the project land in the same project folder in your drive.
